Project Description:

Sankofa is an Akan word meaning ‘we should look to the past while moving forward into the future’ and is symbolized by a bird in flight with its head turned backwards. As the name suggests, the design of this modern holiday villa invokes memory of the island’s rich African ancestry by emulating a traditional African village, with the programme broken apart into separate volumes connected by a matrix of outdoor spaces.

Formal and material aspects of the construction also reflect the heritage of boatbuilding on the island of Carriacou, where it is located. Conceived as a series of earth toned-pigmented pavilions, fitted out with locally quarried limestone floors, hardwood doors, and translucent skylight roofs – all spaces command spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea.
